A07983: Prohibiting Ammunition Purchases After Failed Background Check or ERPO

What the Bill Would Do

Assembly Bill 7983 targets ammunition purchases by three categories of prohibited persons: those who have failed a background check, those prohibited from purchasing firearms under federal law (18 USC 922(g)), and those subject to a temporary or extreme risk protection order issued under CPLR Article 63-A^[1]. New York already requires background checks for ammunition purchases under Penal Law 400.03. This bill would direct that required check to be denied when the purchaser falls within the listed prohibited categories.

Current Status

S7236 and A7983 passed both houses. As of July 22, 2026, the official history did not confirm delivery to the Governor or signature. The proposal is not yet law.^[2]
