A07983: Prohibiting Ammunition Purchases After Failed Background Check or ERPO

What the Bill Would Do

Assembly Bill 7983 would require denial of an ammunition background check when the purchaser is prohibited from possessing a shotgun or rifle under the Penal Law, 18 USC 922(g), or a temporary or final extreme risk protection order issued under CPLR Article 63-A^[1]. New York already requires background checks for ammunition purchases under Penal Law 400.03. This bill would direct that required check to be denied when the purchaser falls within the listed prohibited categories.

Current Status

S7236 passed the Senate on May 19, 2026, and the Assembly on May 28, 2026. A7983 was substituted by S7236 on May 28, 2026. As of July 22, 2026, the official history did not confirm delivery to the Governor or signature. The proposal is not yet law.^[2]
