What the Bill Would Do

Senate Bill 6121 would require the preparation and dissemination of written materials regarding child access prevention and the safe storage of firearms[1]. The information must be provided to students and persons in a parental relationship at the beginning of each semester or quarter of the regular school year, starting on or after July 1, 2026. The Assembly companion A07566 remains referred to Codes[2].

This bill is part of a coordinated push on safe storage education in the 2025-2026 session. Chapter 26 (A00814) already established a Department of Health public awareness campaign, and Francesco's Law (A01962/S03385) would strengthen enforcement. S06121 adds a school-based distribution channel to ensure the information reaches families with children.

Current Status

S06121 advanced to third reading in the Senate on February 26, 2026. It is one step from a Senate floor vote.

What to Watch

The July 1, 2026 implementation date is approaching quickly, which creates urgency for legislative action. Key questions include who develops the content — the Department of Education, DCJS, or another agency — and whether schools can customize the materials or must use standardized state-issued documents. Watch for the Assembly to advance A07566 from Codes to keep pace with the Senate timeline.
